Small Kitchen? Here Are the 9 Essentials You Actually Need for Move-In Day
Moving into your first or new apartment is exciting. But standing in a small kitchen, wondering what you actually need? A little overwhelming.
Here's the truth — you don't need a fully stocked kitchen on day one. You just need the right things. The stuff that works hard, stores easily, and doesn't eat up every inch of counter space you don't have.
This list is what I'd tell a friend who's moving in next weekend. Simple, affordable, and actually useful.
The 9 Small Kitchen Essentials
1. Stackable Pots & Pans
A good set of stackable cookware is the single best thing you can do for a small kitchen. Regular pots and pans take up so much cabinet space. Stackable sets nest inside one another, freeing up room for everything else.
You don't need more than 3–4 pieces to start. A small saucepan, a medium pot, and a skillet will cover 90% of what you cook.

2. 1–2 Good Knives (Skip the Block)
Knife blocks look great on Pinterest. In a small kitchen, they take up precious counter space for tools you'll rarely use.
Start with just two knives — a chef's knife and a paring knife. That's genuinely all you need. Store them on a magnetic strip mounted to the wall or in a drawer with a knife guard.

3. Dishes for 2–4 Place Settings
It's tempting to stock up on dishes early. But in a small kitchen, a full set of 8 just means crowded cabinets and more to wash.
Start with 2–4 place settings. One bowl, one plate, one mug per person. Add more as you actually need them.

4. Nesting Mixing Bowls
Mixing bowls are one of those things that seem harmless until you have three large ones taking up half a shelf. Nesting sets stack down to almost nothing.
Look for a set with a lid — it doubles as food storage and saves you from needing as many containers.

5. Space-Saving Prep Tools
A cutting board, a peeler, a grater, and a pair of kitchen scissors will handle most of your prep work. That's it.
Choose a slim cutting board that slides between the counter and the wall, and look for a foldable or collapsible colander if you need one.

6. Vertical Storage — Hooks + Racks
When counter space is limited, go up. A few adhesive hooks inside cabinet doors or on the wall can hold measuring cups, oven mitts, and small tools without taking up any drawer space.
An over-the-door rack on a pantry or cabinet door is also a game changer for spices, foil, and wrap.

7. One Multi-Use Appliance
If you're going to have one appliance on your counter, make it earn its spot. An air fryer that also bakes, or an Instant Pot that also slow cooks — something that replaces two or three single-use gadgets.
Skip the toaster oven, the rice cooker, and the single-use appliances for now. You can always add later.

8. A Simple Sink Setup
Your sink area can get cluttered fast. Keep it to three things — dish soap, a sponge, and a small drying rack that fits your space.
A slim over-the-sink drying rack is worth it if you have a narrow counter. It keeps things tidy without taking up extra room.
9. Minimal Pantry Basics
You don't need a fully stocked pantry on move-in day. Start with the basics — olive oil, salt, pepper, a few spices you actually use, pasta, rice, and canned goods.
A small turntable (lazy Susan) inside a cabinet makes everything visible and easy to grab without digging.
A Few Bonus Picks Worth Adding Early
Once you have the 9 essentials sorted, these are the next things worth grabbing:
A can opener — easy to forget, impossible to live without
Measuring cups and spoons — a slim nesting set takes up almost no space
A silicone spatula set — versatile, heat-safe, and easy to store
Reusable food storage bags — takes up less space than bulky containers
A simple dish towel set — 4–6 is plenty, rotate and wash regularly
